Making an interview feel natural

Most people I film are not professional presenters, and they do not need to be.

I usually prefer a real conversation to rehearsed statements. Before the shoot, I spend time understanding the subject and what the audience needs to take away, which makes it easier to ask useful follow-up questions and help contributors speak naturally.

Making complicated subjects understandable

I enjoy projects where the subject is genuinely difficult to explain. I have filmed researchers, specialists and organisations where accuracy matters and the challenge is deciding what the audience actually needs to understand.

That may mean combining interviews with working environments, demonstrations, graphics or several different perspectives rather than asking one person to explain everything.

For many interviews I can handle camera, lighting and audio myself. I also think about the environments, details and supporting footage needed to make the finished film work – not just the interview itself.

When a production requires additional cameras, more extensive lighting or other specialists, I add the appropriate crew. I can provide filming only or take the project through editing, graphics and final delivery.
